As the weather warms up and more families head outdoors, it's wonderful to see our Upper Windermere pathways, parks, and streets bustling with activity. Children and adults alike are enjoying scooters, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, and other wheeled activities throughout the community.

With increased outdoor activity comes an important opportunity for all of us—both riders and drivers—to help keep our neighbourhood safe.
We encourage all residents - including parents and guardians - to take a few moments to review safe riding habits with their children and teens. Simple reminders can make a big difference in preventing accidents and ensuring everyone can enjoy our shared spaces safely.

For Pedestrians:
Stay alert and avoid distractions like phones or headphones when walking near roads and pathways.
Use crosswalks and designated crossings whenever possible.
Make eye contact with drivers and riders before crossing.
Wear bright or reflective clothing in low-light conditions.
Be aware that bikes, scooters, and e-bikes may be approaching quickly on shared pathways.
Supervise young children closely near streets and driveways.
Keep furry friends safe on a leash at all times.
For wheeled riders:
Always wear a properly fitted helmet when riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, or rollerblades.
Be aware of your surroundings and watch for pedestrians, vehicles, and other riders.
Stop when approaching intersections, pathways, and crosswalks.
Follow traffic signs and community pathway rules.
Avoid distractions such as phones or headphones while riding.
Be courteous and give pedestrians plenty of space when passing.
Use lights and reflective gear when riding during the evening or in low-light conditions.
For drivers:
Please slow down and follow posted speed limits, especially in residential areas and near parks, playgrounds, and pathways.
Stay alert for children who may enter the roadway unexpectedly while riding wheeled devices.
Exercise extra caution at intersections, crosswalks, and community entrances.
Minimize distractions and keep your focus on the road.
Allow extra space when passing cyclists and other riders.

Other ways we can improve pedestrian and driver safety include reporting concerns to City of Edmonton via 311 (phone or app) or contacting Councillor Mike Elliott about local issues.
Our neighbourhood streets and pathways are shared by residents of all ages. Whether you're walking, riding, or driving, a little extra awareness and patience can go a long way toward preventing accidents and creating a safer community for everyone.
Thank you for doing your part to keep Upper Windermere a welcoming, active, and safe place to live. We wish everyone a fun and enjoyable season outdoors!
